Green Hills is an affluent neighborhood about five miles south of downtown, built around Hillsboro Pike. It is best known for two things that could not be more different: the city's premier shopping mall, and the Bluebird Cafe, the tiny songwriter room that helped define Nashville's music.

This guide covers what Green Hills is, what to do there, where to eat, and where to stay. It is a shopping-and-dining stop more than a sightseeing one, with one very famous exception.

Orientation: Green Hills sits south of downtown, near the Vanderbilt, Belmont, and Lipscomb campuses, and a short drive from Hillsboro Village and 12 South. It is a drive-to neighborhood; you will not walk here from downtown. The Bluebird Cafe is small and books out fast, so plan that one well ahead.

The Vibe

Green Hills is polished and residential. Leafy streets of higher-end homes wrap around a busy retail core. It is calm, upscale, and unhurried, the part of Nashville that feels least like a tourist destination and most like a prosperous neighborhood going about its day. People come here to shop, eat well, and, if they planned ahead, to hear songwriters.

Things to Do in Green Hills

The Mall at Green Hills

The Mall at Green Hills is the city's upscale shopping center, with more than 120 stores including Nordstrom and a run of luxury and digitally native brands. A large renovation is underway, so parts of the mall are changing through 2026. See the Nashville shopping guide.

The Bluebird Cafe

The Bluebird Cafe is the reason music fans make the trip to Green Hills. It is a tiny, quiet listening room where songwriters perform their own work in the round, and it has launched careers and inspired its share of country songs and screen moments. Seats are limited and reservations go fast, so plan well ahead. See the music venues guide.

Where to Eat and Drink

Green Hills has a deep, diverse run of restaurants, from local favorites to chains, clustered around the shopping core. It is reliable, varied dining rather than a scene; pair it with a shopping afternoon or a Bluebird show. For a special dinner out, Germantown and the Gulch are the stronger targets, both a short drive away.

Where to Stay

Green Hills is mostly residential, with limited lodging. Most visitors stay downtown, in the Gulch, or in Midtown and drive over to shop or to catch a Bluebird show. It is an easy drive from all of them. See the where to stay guide.
